Coffee Bean light rail molding runs along the underside of your wall cabinets, closing the open edge where the cabinet bottom meets the room. It is the piece that turns a row of uppers into a finished elevation — and the piece that hides under-cabinet lighting, which is where the name comes from.

Without it, the bottom edge of a wall cabinet shows its construction: the plywood bottom, the fixed light strip, the wiring clipped to the back. Light rail drops below that line and shields all of it from anyone standing in the kitchen. Lighting washes down the backsplash instead of glaring straight out.

Like every stained piece in the line, grain and figure vary naturally from piece to piece. Run the light rail across a wall in one continuous piece where the length allows, so any variation reads as one board rather than as a mismatch at a joint.

Where light rail goes

Along the full underside front edge of a wall cabinet run, and around the returns at the end of a run where the cabinet bottom would otherwise be visible from the side. One face is finished; the unfinished face sits up against the cabinet bottom.

For a fully finished underside — visible on a peninsula, or anywhere people look up at the cabinets — pair it with 1/4" plywood panels cut to the cabinet bottom. The light rail frames that panel and the whole underside reads as cabinetry rather than as a gap.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need light rail if I am not installing under-cabinet lighting?

Most people still fit it. The lighting is only half the job — the other half is closing the open bottom edge of the cabinet, which shows plywood and hardware from anywhere lower than the cabinet itself. If you sit at a counter or an island facing the uppers, that edge is in your sightline the whole time.

How much do I order?

Measure the full front length of each wall cabinet run and add the depth of any end that returns into the room, then round up to the next 94" piece. Order one extra piece on any kitchen with more than two separate runs — every joint and mitre costs you a few inches, and offcuts rarely land where the next run needs them.

What length do I actually receive?

94". The piece is listed at 96" but is cut to 94" for shipping, so plan every run on 94" and not on the listed length. On a wall longer than that you will have a joint — place it over a cabinet stile where the seam falls on a natural break rather than in the middle of an open span.
