Coffee Bean outside corner molding is a 7/8" x 7/8" x 96" solid oak stick, finished on both exposed faces, that closes the raw plywood edge wherever two finished surfaces turn a corner. It is the small part that decides whether an island reads as built-in cabinetry or as boxes with a panel stuck to the back.

The corner is where skin panels give themselves away. Butt a finished panel against a finished cabinet side and you get a visible line of bare plywood core running the full height of the cabinet — lighter than the finish, rough to the touch, and obvious from anywhere in the room. This molding covers that line.

As with every stained piece in the line, grain and figure vary naturally from piece to piece. Order the molding with the panels it will sit against where you can, so the pieces come off related stock.

Where outside corner molding goes

Use it on the backside of an island, a peninsula, or any exposed cabinet run, at each outside corner where the cabinet side meets the exposed plywood edge of a skin or island panel. A typical island with panels on the back and both ends needs two sticks; a peninsula with one open end needs one.

Cut to length on site. One 96" stick covers the full 34-1/2" height of a base run nearly three times over, so most islands are covered by a single piece with offcuts to spare.

Frequently asked questions

How many sticks do I need?

Count your outside corners, not your linear feet. Each corner takes one run of molding from floor to countertop — 34-1/2" on a base cabinet. A 96" stick yields two such runs comfortably, with enough left for a third if your cuts are clean. A standard island panelled on the back and both ends has two outside corners, so one stick usually does it.

Can I skip it if my panel fits tightly?

A tight fit does not help here. The problem is not a gap — it is the exposed plywood core on the cut edge of the panel itself, which stays visible no matter how close the joint is. The only ways to hide it are this molding or edge banding, and banding on a 1/4" edge peels at exactly the spot people brush past.

Does it match the cabinet finish?

Yes, it carries the same Coffee Bean stain and the same factory-baked UV-cured lacquer as the doors and panels. Because it is solid oak rather than veneer, the grain on the molding runs finer and tighter than on a door panel. It reads as the same finish, which is what a corner needs to do.
